Designing around hide size and yield

Work backwards from the largest single component in the design. How should a designer handle finishing and colour?
Finish changes the perceived value of an exotic hide more than any other variable a designer controls, and the same skin can read as glossy and formal or matte and understated depending purely on the finishing route chosen. Glazed, matte, hand-polished, dyed-through and printed finishes all sit on the same raw material.
Two practical rules save time.
